about

‘Who Am I’ is the 3rd single from Mark Perry’s new album 'Northwest' set for release in the Fall of 2021. The song is a product of the pandemic and asks the existential question of the moment - who am I?

"It's a big question many of us pack around," says Perry. "When what we perceive as 'normal' in life suddenly wavers, we begin to question what ‘normal' ever was. The COVID-19 pandemic tore down many of our perceptions. Our social life became restricted. So many things we enjoyed — a cup of coffee or tea, a beer, a glass of wine with friends — became questionable events. Work places were adjusted to slow down social interaction. We humans stumbled and began to show cracks.

"‘Who Am I’ is about that waltz through despair and self doubt. It's almost a strange dance through depression, anxiety and dementia. We question our perceptions, yet we keep moving onward because we must. It sounds slightly different because of its guitar tuning and chord voicings. The mix of a relatively quick feel and rhythm with a haunting melody, project a subtle sense of optimism."

'Who Am I' – like most of the tracks on Perry’s upcoming album 'Northwest', was written during the COVID-19 pandemic and recorded “COVID long distance” style with Perry’s producer in Whitehorse, Yukon, and musicians recording in their own remote studios across Canada — from Tobin Frank in Victoria, to Mip in Toronto, Andrea McColeman in Whitehorse, and Perry, Mark Thibeault, Kiri Daust, and Ian Olmstead in Smithers, BC, Canada.

lyrics

There’s a beautiful photo of you on the wall
Who’s that with you ?
You tell me its me
I look and I know
That just can’t be true
He’s got a smile and a plan
It’s easy to see, I’m not that man

Who are you and who am I ?
Do you miss me when we say goodbye ?
There’s pictures of us here
On every wall
I’m sorry I have to ask why
Who are you, who am I ?

The lines on your face (now)
Did I put them all there ?
Somehow – (For some reason)
you say you still care
I put my arm around you
You turn away, Hey, did I hear you say
I miss you

You say you still hold out hope
But you’re losing ground
What you hoped for
Just can’t be found
